Can I get the credits from my previous studies recognized?
If you have studied in a different programme at Vilnius University or another higher education institution, either in Lithuania or abroad, you can have your credits recognized.
If you have studied subjects similar to those in your current programme, they can be recognized, so you will not have to study them again.
If you have studied subjects that are not part of your current study programme, they can be counted as part of your individualised studies (applies only for students enrolled from 2023 and onwards in Bachelor's or Integrated study programmes).
The request for subject recognition must be submitted in the eStudent account before the semester starts or within the first two weeks of the semester using the application form "Request for Recognition of Subjects (Modules) / Competencies".
If you studied at Vilnius University, you do not need to submit a certificate of your study results, as this information is already available to our staff in the system. However, if you studied in a different higher education institution, you must attach a certificate of your results issued by that institution, along with descriptions of the subjects you wish to get recognized.
Credit will be awarded upon approval by the Study Programme Committee (SPC). After you submit your application, the Faculty’s Study Department will coordinate with the SPC to explore the possibility of credit recognition.
Exams, assessment and academic debts
What should I do if I get ill during an exam or cannot attend for another reason?
If you are unable to attend the final assessment of a subject at the scheduled time due to illness or any other significant reason, you must inform the course lecturer. Additionally, you must submit a request to the Head of the Core Academic Unit (CAU) to reschedule the assessment for a different time, but this request must be made no later than one month after the new semester begins.
You must communicate the reason for your absence to the CAU administration within 3 working days of the scheduled examination date, and you are required to provide justification by the deadline set by the administration.
What should I do if I have missed a mid-term exam or another interim assessment?
If you miss a mid-term exam or any other interim assessment (such as a test or project presentation) due to illness or another significant reason, you need to coordinate with your lecturer(s) and the Head of the Core Academic Unit to schedule a make-up assessment at a later time.
When do exam retakes typically take place?
If you do not pass your exams, you are allowed to retake them once within the first two weeks of the new semester. If the exam period has been extended, you may retake the exam within two weeks after the extended deadline. The retake schedules are available on the VU timetables portal. If you do not see a timetable for a specific subject, please reach out to the lecturer(s) of that subject or contact the Academic Advisor in the Core Academic Unit for assistance
How do I eliminate debt or academic debt?
If a student fails to retake the course unit (module) exam (e.g. receives a grade lower than 5 points out of 10), a debt is recorded, which can be eliminated by the following steps:
1. REPEATING THE COURSE UNIT (MODULE). The student attends the course alongside lower-year students, organizing their timetable individually. To have a course repetition credited, a repetition request must be submitted through the eStudent account (eAPPLICATIONS/Repetition Request), and the specific course being repeated should be indicated in the request.
Students are required to cover the costs of repeating previously failed subjects. Once the request has been processed, you will see the repeat order and the amount due for the repeat in your student account. You should make your payment within the first month of the new semester.
2. Taking a Subject Externally (only with the instructor's consent). The student independently studies the subject and only attends the exam and retake. To do this, the student must submit a request to take the subject externally (eStudent/eAPPLICATIONS/Request for repeating the subject externally) and specify the subject to be taken externally in the request. When submitting the request for learning the subject externally, it is mandatory to check the subject description to see whether it can be taken externally. If the subject description does not include this information, it is necessary to discuss the matter with the lecturer(s) and ask for permission to forward it to the Academic Advisor of the Core Academic Unit, informing them that there is no information in the subject description about the opportunity to take the exam externally. Once the request is processed, you will see the injunction regarding the subject retake and the amount to be paid for the subject retake in your student account. This amount should be paid within the first month of the semester's start.
3. REPLACING THE COURSE UNIT (MODULE) WITH ANOTHER SUBJECT (applies to General University Studies, Individualised Studies and Elective Course Units (Modules). If a General University Studies / Elective / Individual Studies subject is no longer offered or there are other important reasons, the subject can be changed to another one. The student attends the classes of the new subject with students from lower years or another study programme, having individually arranged the schedule. For the subject retake to be credited, the student must submit a retake request (eStudent/eAPPLICATIONS/Request for retaking a subject) and specify in the request which subject they would like to retake instead of the original one.
When a student repeats a course unit (module), retakes the course unit (module) for the first time externally after independent repetition or replaces the course unit (module) with another course unit (module), and fails the course unit (module) and then fails and retakes, academic debt is recorded, which is eliminated by analogous methods of debt elimination.
Individualised studies, General university studies, Elective (optional) courses
Individualised Studies (IND): what is important to consider?
Timetable – check that your chosen subject is compatible with your compulsory subject timetable. If the timetable for your individualized study subject is not yet available, consider looking at other subjects. If the timetable for your chosen IND course does not align with your schedule, you can switch to another course during the second registration period, which opens during the first two weeks of the new semester. Please be sure to follow the deadlines outlined in the VU Study Calendar.
Location - carefully consider where you need to attend lectures. Courses may be offered not only in Vilnius but also at Šiauliai Academy and Kaunas Faculty. Additionally, the lectures may be conducted remotely.
Language of instruction - the subject (module) can be conducted in Lithuanian, English or another foreign language.
Your knowledge and skills - some subjects are open to everyone, while others may require prior knowledge acquired from your previous studies and must meet the prerequisites for successful study (please check the subject description in the eStudent account).
Compulsory subjects in your study programme - you cannot choose an IND (Individual Studies) subject if the competencies developed in that subject are already or will be acquired by studying a mandatory subject in your study program. Check your study plan in the eStudent account.
What are General University Studies (GUS)?
General University Studies (GUS) is part of the Individualised Studies course units (modules) and can also be selected independently, depending on the main study programme. GUS encompasses a variety of topics aimed at enhancing general knowledge in specific study fields across all Undergraduate and Integrated study programmes at Vilnius University.
What if I don't select an IND, Elective (optional) course or GUS in time?
If you do not select your subjects during the main registration period or decide to change your subjects after the registration ends, you can make adjustments during the additional registration period during the first two weeks of the new semester in your eStudent account. Please refer to the Study Calendar for the specific dates.
Individual plan, changing the Form and Timetable of the Study Programme
What is an individual study plan?
An individual study plan is a pre-established arrangement of subjects (modules) to be studied and their assessments during the semester (or academic year). The individual study plan may also include new study subjects (modules) that meet the student’s needs by replacing those specified in the study programme. The individual study plan may extend beyond the duration specified in the study programme but must comply with the requirements set by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Lithuania.
The student should submit a request to their Academic Core Units Study Department according to the established deadlines. The Study Department prepares a preliminary individual study plan, which is then submitted to the Study Program Committee (SPC). The SPC reviews the request and makes a decision regarding the individual study plan. Later, the plan is approved by the student, the vice-dean of studies, and the chairperson of the SPC. This process may take from 1 to 4 weeks, so the request should be submitted as early as possible.
Changing the study programme
Students of Bachelor's, Master's and Integrated study programmes can change their study programme to another if their current study programme and the study programme they wish to be transferred to remain in the same group of study fields.
To change your programme, please get in touch with the Study Department of the Academic Core Unit, where the programme of interest is offered. Requests for a change of study programme should be made in the eStudent account. More information here.
Can I change the form of the study programme?
Students enrolled in Bachelor's, Master's, and Integrated study programmes can change their study format (for example, from full-time to part-time) or schedule if these options are available for the specific study programme.
If students wish to change their study format or schedule, they must contact their Academic Core Unit.
Suspension or termination of studies
What is academic leave/suspension?
Suspension of studies or academic leave are ways not to terminate studies at the University, but to temporarily suspend them. The differences between academic leave and study suspension can be seen in the chart below:
The student status remains valid during academic leave or suspension of studies. However, students cannot study and take exams/repair (academic) debts during academic leave.
How do I terminate my studies?
The decision to terminate your studies is influenced not only by the academic experience but also by your social environment and how well you can balance your studies with personal life or work commitments. Before making a final decision, it is important to consult with your Academic Advisor(s) in your Academic Core Unit.
If you choose to terminate your studies, firstly, you need to submit an e-request on your eStudent account (eApplications/Application for Consultation for Termination of the Study Agreement).
Additionally, make sure to settle any remaining obligations with the University divisions before officially terminating the study agreement. More information on the process for resolving these matters can be found here.
I am in a state-non-funded place and want to terminate my studies, will I get back a part of my tuition fees?
If a student terminates their study agreement, the tuition fees paid per semester (the cost of the study credits of subjects (modules)) shall be reimbursed in the following cases:
- prior to the beginning of the semester: 100 % of the cost of tuition (the cost of subjects (modules)) paid for the semester which the student (unclassified student) failed to attend shall be reimbursed;
- from the 1st to the 30th of September (or from 4th to the 28th of February): an amount equivalent to 80 % of the cost of tuition per semester (the cost of subjects (modules)) shall be reimbursed;
- from the 1st to the 31st of October (or from 1st to the 31st of March): an amount equivalent to 60 % of the cost of tuition per semester shall be reimbursed;
- from the 1st to the 30th of November (or from the 1st to the 30th of April): an amount equivalent to 40 % of the cost of tuition per semester shall be reimbursed;
- from the 1st to the 31st of December (or from the 1st to the 31st of May): an amount equivalent to 20 % of the cost of tuition per semester shall be reimbursed;
- in case the Agreement is terminated after the 1st of January (or after the 1st of June) or later, no fee shall be reimbursed;
I am in a state-funded place and I want to terminate my studies. Will I have to return my tuition fees?
If you are studying in a state-funded place and decide to terminate your studies, the State Studies Foundation (Valstybinis studijų fondas) may require you to return half of the annual tuition fee. This repayment must be made within three years of the date the Foundation issues a warning to you.
It is important to pay attention to the exact circumstances of the study agreement termination.
Below are the cases when the tuition fee must be returned and when not:
No need to return the tuition fee:
- If studies are terminated during the first semester of the first cycle (Bachelor's or Integrated studies) (from September 1 to January 26);
- If studies are terminated during academic leave due to illness or child care;
- If studies are terminated after all semester requirements are met (semester completed without debts) and studies are terminated before the start of the new semester;
- If the final thesis is submitted to the higher education institution but not defended, or if the defense is not completed.
The tuition fee must be returned:
- If studies are discontinued during the semester (except during the first semester of the first cycle studies);
- If studies are discontinued during academic leave for personal reasons or during a study suspension period;
- If studies are discontinued between semesters but there are unmet requirements from previous semesters.
