Scholarships for Lithuanian Language and Culture Winter Course (2024/2025)
Vilnius University is delighted to invite students, lecturers or researchers of higher education/research institutions of foreign countries and foreigners of Lithuanian origin to participate in Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Course 2024, funded by Education Exchanges Support Foundation.
The programme combines four weeks of intensive Lithuanian language classes for beginners and workshops with a diverse range of cultural events, sightseeing tours and excursions to get acquainted with the history, culture and lifestyle in Lithuania.
Lithuanian Language and Culture Course will take place:
- from 04-01-2025 to 02-02-2025 in Kaunas faculty (Kaunas Campus)

Financial Provisions:
• The participant approved for Lithuanian language and culture course will receive a scholarship (~825 EUR).
• Tuition fee for Lithuanian language and culture course will be covered by the Republic of Lithuania and directly transferred to Vilnius University.
• Any other fees, travel and accommodation costs shall be covered by the scholarship holder.
PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS FOR FOREIGNERS:
The candidate has to be a 1st cycle (Bachelor), 2nd cycle (Master), 3rd cycle (PhD) student, lecturer or researcher of a higher education and research institution of a foreign country (except Russian and Belarusian citizens).
The candidates must provide copies of the listed documents through online application system:
1. Official letter from the candidate’s higher education and research institution approving the status of a student, lecturer or researcher. N.B. For students the letter must contain information on the applicant’s current cycle of studies (1st, 2nd or 3rd study cycle), year of studies and expected date of graduation
2. One recommendation letter (filled out through the online application system).
3. Motivation letter (filled out through the online application system).
!!! Please note: a foreigner who is a student, lecturer or researcher at a higher education institution in Lithuania is not eligible for this scholarship.
PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS FOR FOREIGNERS OF LITHUANIAN ORIGIN:
The candidate has to meet all criteria listed below:
• a child, grandchild, great-grandchild of Lithuanians living abroad or a foreigner of Lithuanian origin (citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who have lived abroad at least three years or citizens of foreign states who have lost the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania shall be regarded as Lithuanians living abroad. A foreigner shall be considered to be a foreigner of Lithuanian descent if at least one of his parents or grandparents is or was Lithuanian and who considers himself Lithuanian);
• an active member of Lithuanian community abroad
OR a student, lecturer or researcher of foreign higher education and research institution.
The candidates must provide copies of the listed documents through online application system:
1. Proof of Lithuanian origin:
• a certificate or other document proving the Lithuanian origin issued by the Lithuanian community of a respective country or other competent authority (an embassy and similar);
• a document issued by a competent foreign authority (a school, municipality, embassy and similar) proving that the person has resided for three years in a foreign country if he/she is an alien
2. One recommendation letter from a Lithuanian community or a higher education and research institution abroad (filled out through the online application system).
3. Motivation letter (filled out through the online application system).
Priority (and extra points) will be given to the applicants who:
- apply for the language and culture courses for the first time;
- formally or informally study Lithuanian language, history and culture as a subject at home institution (a document confirming it must be added to the application form);
- are citizens of Ukraine and Taiwan (for Foreigners category only).
IMPORTANT
- Candidates can apply only to one institution that organizes Lithuanian language and culture courses.
- All applications will be automatically rejected as unsuitable if the candidate applies to multiple institutions.
- These courses are not available for holders of higher than C1 level of Lithuanian language and native speakers.
- Candidates can only take advantage of the tuition waiver for the maximum of 3 times in total. Those who apply to participate for the fourth time will not be considered.

Scholarships for Exchange Studies (2024-2025) (CLOSED)
Short–term (1–2 semesters) studies
Lithuanian authorities conclude cultural agreements with foreign countries to promote cultural links and co-operation in the fields of education and science.
Nominations according to the conditions stipulated in the agreements or concrete calls for nominations have to be made by the sending country’s authorities; nevertheless, evidence of acceptance of the candidate to the host institution in Lithuania is one of the prerequisites for being awarded a state scholarship.
Scholarships for short-term (1-2 semesters) studies are offered for candidates who are citizens of following countries:
The Eastern Partnership countries: |
Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia. |
ASEM countries: |
Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, China, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam. |
Lithuania priority export market countries: |
Israel, the USA, United Arab Emirates, Canada, Turkey, South Africa Republic. |
Financial Provisions:
- Candidates of the first and second study cycle, approved for the short–term studies, will receive a monthly scholarship of 550 EUR. Candidates of the third study cycle and resident studies approved for the short–term studies will receive a monthly scholarship of 1100 EUR (the exact sum of the total amount paid for the candidate will be calculated according to the number of days that specific month consists of, thus slight variations in the monthly scholarship might occur).
- Tuition fee for studies will be covered by the Republic of Lithuania and directly transferred to Vilnius University.
- Any other fees, travel and accommodation costs shall be covered by the scholarship holder.
Note: Lithuanian state scholarships cannot be double funded from other sources, e.g. other scholarships or other academic exchange programmes.
Programme requirements:
- Applicants for the Lithuanian State Scholarships are required to choose or design their study programme which might include subjects preferably from only one faculty/ department of Vilnius University. Updated list of courses for 2024-25 will be available in April.
- Applicants for the short-term studies are required to collect 30 ECTS per one semester (it is not applicable for candidates of the third study cycle).
- The Conditional Agreement for studies must be completely filled in and signed by three parties: the candidate, the responsible person at the sending institution and Vilnius University.

Lithuanian short–term (1–2 semesters) studies
Foreigners from any other country wishing to pursue studies in the Department of Lithuanian Studies at Vilnius University may apply for the Lithuanian state scholarship designed exclusively for Lithuanian (Baltic) studies.
Scholarships for Lithuanian short-term (1-2 semesters) studies are offered:
- For students, lecturers or researchers (lecturers and researchers in the fields of linguistics or philology only) of higher education and research institution abroad (except citizens of Belarus and Russia).
- For foreigners of Lithuanian origin from all countries.
- For students, lecturer or researcher of a Lithuanian (Baltic) science center of a foreign country (except citizens of Belarus and Russia).
Financial Provisions:
- All candidates approved for the Lithuanian short–term studies will receive a monthly scholarship of 825 EUR (the exact sum of the total amount paid for the candidate will be calculated according to the number of days that specific month consists of, thus slight variations in the monthly scholarship might occur).

Programme requirements for Lithuanian Short-Term studies:
- Applicants for the Lithuanian studies scholarship are required to choose or design their study programme in such a way that at least 50% of the subjects are related to Lithuanian studies, which might include subjects such as Lithuanian philology, linguistics, literature, Lithuanian history, ethnology and folklore, culturology, etc.
- Applicants for the Lithuanian studies are required to collect 30 ECTS per one semester. Updated list of courses for 2024-25 will be available in April.
- The Conditional Agreement for Studies must be completely filled in and signed by three parties: the candidate, the responsible person at the sending institution and Vilnius University.

Financial Issues for Free-Movers
For NON-DEGREE students
There are two types of NON-DEGREE students:
Exchange Students are those who come to Vilnius University under the exchange programme or bilateral agreement. They are treated according to the programme or agreement conditions and, as a rule, are exempt from the tuition fees at Vilnius University.
Free-Movers are those who come to Vilnius University under their own initiative. They are expected to cover their tuition fees which are calculated according to their chosen courses so the prices may vary from faculty to faculty.
