RESEARCH PROJECTS CARRIED OUT IN 2014

Projects Supported by University Budget

Research in Structural and Functional Peculiarities of Germanic, Romance, Slavonic and Lithuanian Languages. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aušra Janulienė. 2010–2015.

The teachers of the Department, the researchers of this field, deal with the issues of English language teaching/learning, especially, English for specific purposes, cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics and lexicography.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. L. Arcimavičienėfocuses her research in the field of cognitive linguistics, specifically, on the use of metaphors in media and political discourse.
Lect. Dr. L. Bikelienė analyses connector usage in native and non-native learners’ English writing.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. J. Korostenskaja made an attempt to lay the foundations for a methodology which could help account for the striking yet formally inexplicable phonetic and semantic similarities across languages. Another field of her research interests is generative syntax. Her recent investigation is concerned with the verb raising parameter in Lithuanian.
Lect. R. Sirvydė focused her esearch on cross cultural differences and how our cultural thought shapes our language.
Assist. J. Kirejeva also takes particular interest in the issues that fall within the scope of cognitive linguistics, discourse analysis, conversational analysis and linguistic conflictology.

Language Teaching as a Prerequisite of the Development of Professional Competencies. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aušra Janulienė. 2010–2015.

The teaching staff of the institute analyse the developmental issues of professional and general competences, apply research results to the teaching practice. This research trend also encompasses the department teachers’ insights into foreign language teaching methods, learners’ assessment and self-assessment, innovative approaches and new technologies, psychological-pedagogical teaching-learning aspects.

EU funded projects

Dr. Olga Medvedeva has been involved in the European DIV.ED project entitled “Diversity in the Learning Experience in (Higher) Education” (Agreement Number 528049-LLP-1-2012-1-AT-ERASMUS-ESIN, 2012–2014) carried out in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme supported by the European Commission.  The Coordinating Institution of the project is Johannes Kepler University Linz (Austria). Dr. O. Medvedeva has been involved in two more international projects: Lingu@network (530964-LLP-1-2012-1-ES-KA2-KA2MP). 2012–2014. http://www.linguanet-worldwide.org/lnetrest/#/  and NELLIP: the Network of European Language Labelled Initiatives, is funded by the European Commission in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme – Key Activity 2 Languages, 2011–2014.

Dr. L. Bikelienė is a recognised research partner of the research project Lexico-grammatical variation in advanced learner varieties funded by the Central Research Development Fund of the University of Bremen, Germany, one of eleven “Universities of Excellence” in Germany that compete internationally in top-level research.

Research in Structural and Functional Peculiarities of Germanic, Romance, Slavonic and Lithuanian Languages. Assoc. Prof. Dr. R. Kriaučiūnienė. 2010–2015.

One of the research trends of the department is the analysis of structural and functional characteristics of the Germanic and Lithuanian languages. The PhD student L. Inčiuraitė-Noreikienė investigates the morphemic structure and formation of nominal words with neoclassical elements in Standard Lithuanian by the application of synchronic linguistic analysis.  She has actively participated at international conferences where she delivered presentations on neoclassical formations in Lithuanian.

The other research trend carried out by the members of the Department fall into the area of applied linguistics (sociolinguistics, the research of functional properties of English as the lingua franca, sociolinguistic issues of the English language (national, social, cultural identity) in the context of the practical teaching of foreign languages in the European framework, discourse analysis of scientific texts). The PhD student D. Pinkevičienė exploresthe area ofsociolinguistics with a focus on the linguistic diversity and the new terminology of polylingualism, translanguaging and metrolingualism.

Research in Germanic, Romance and Slavonic Literatures and Cultures. Dr. S. Poštič. 2010–2015.

Dr. S. Poštič represents the second research trend of the Institute related to the traditions of literatures and cultures, and their relationship with the Lithuanian language and culture.
Dr. Svetozar Poštič also takes interest in the issues that fall within the scope of translation studies.
He translated the book by Prof. G. Vitkus Europos mozaika from Lithuanian into Serbian.
Dr. D. Costello focusses on the research in the area of literary and gender studies. 

Language Teaching as a Prerequisite of the Development of Professional Competences. Assoc. Prof. Dr. R. Kriaučiūnienė. 2010–2015.

This trend is related to the analysis of the developmental issues of functional, professional and general competences and application of the research results to the teaching practice carried out by the below mentioned researchers of the department. 
Assoc. Prof. Dr. L. Chodzkienė focuses on the topic of her research related to the Intercultural Communicative Competence and its development. In 2014 she designed a study book for the students of languages entitled What Should Every Student Know about Intercultural Communication? She also highlighted the issues of the development of students’ Intercultural Communicative Competence in her presentations at international conferences and publications.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. R. Kriaučiūnienė continues her research into the development of value attitudes and takes particular interest in the establishment of links between values and intercultural competence.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Z. Mažuolienė made a comprehensive analysis of the National Matura examinations in the English Language in terms of test content, format, tasks, evaluation criteria, their compliance with general education plans, compared the English language tests of National Matura examinations of 2014 with the tests of the Russian, German and French languages, pointed out their strengths and weakensses as well as highlighted the ways of their imporvement.  

EU FUNDED PROJECTS

Project Development of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Education (2011–2013). Participants: Assoc. Prof. Dr. L. Chodzkienė, Assoc. Prof. Dr. R. Kriaučiūnienė, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Z. Mažuolienė, lect. L. Zavadskienė and lect. I. Rozgienė have been continuing their research in the area of CLIL, focusing on different aspects of CLIL (historical development of CLIL, language and cultural aspects of CLIL as well as assessment criteria, teachers’s and learners’ viewpoints of CLIL).

The Coordinating Institution of the project is Johannes Kepler University Linz (Austria). Link - http://www.diversity-ed.eu The project partners from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Lithuania and Portugal have pooled their varied expertise - experience in Erasmus exchanges at universities, distance and blended learning, visual arts and ICT-based pedagogy – to achieve the project aims.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. R. Kriaučiūnienė’s and Assoc. Prof. Dr. L. Chodzkienė’s main contribution to the project outputs encompassed the design of the Module chapters, where L. Chodzkiene together with the co-author Dr. O. Medvedeva focused on the topics on how to Expand the knowledge on diversity and Verbal Communication, whereas R. Kriaučiūnienė dealt with the issues of Values and attitudes in the learning process.

At the end of September 2014 the Project Partner meeting was held in Vilnius where the participants from seven countries shared their experience on integration of DELA-NOBA activities into the language classrooms and presented the survey results.

Erasmus+Cooperation and Innovation in Teachers' Associations (CITA), 2014-1-ES01-KA200-003382. Lect. L. Zavadskienė – participant. September 2014 until August 2016. Coordinated by APABAL (Associació de Professors d’Anglès de Balears). Other project partners  IATEFL-HU ( International Association of English Teachers-Hungary) and LAKMA (Lithuanian Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language).
The project aims at expanding the European dimension of regional teachers’ associations providing teachers and the community in general with professional support and interesting and innovative activities that will lead to collaboration for formal, informal and non-formal training and to a greater interest and motivation towards the profession.

Research in Structural and Functional Peculiarities of the Germanic, Romance, Slavonic and Lithuanian Languages. Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. Banionytė. 2010–2015.

The research object is German for Specific Purposes, its syntactic and other structures. V. Banionytė’s investigation results were presented at an international conference examining vocabulary, terminology and syntax of the language of natural sciences based on chemistry texts.

Lecturer Dr. D. Jarmalavičius focuses his research on the derivation of words of Germanic origin in the first manuscripts of bilingual dictionaries of the Baltic languages. He also published an article related to his reseach topic dealing with the German compound nouns in the handwritten Latvian-German dictionary of J. Langijus.

Language Teaching as a Prerequisite of the Development of Professional Competencies. Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. J. Pukevičiūtė 2010–2015.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. J. Pukevičiūtė conducts research in the field of Education science. The aim of her practice book Fachdeutsch • Mathematik 1 is to develop different language skills: reading, writing, speaking. It also aims at helping students understand and interpret original scientific texts and develop students’ability of producing high quality summaries of scientific texts.

RESEARCH PROJECTS CARRIED OUT IN 2014

Research of the structures (grammatical, lexical, semantic and stylistic peculiarities) of the Romance, Slavic and Lithuanian languages, their integration into the teaching process and lexicographic practice. Prof. Dr. D. Melnikienė. 2010–2015.

Prof. Dr. D. Balšaitytė investigates the structure of the stressed vowel formants in the pronunciation of Lithuanians and Russians originated in Lithuania. She has presented her research findings at international scientific conferences where she delivered presentations on her research results.

Prof. Dr. D. Melnikienė continued conducting her research into the aspects of bilingual lexicography, lexicology. Collective monograph La révolution du dictionnaire. XIX-XX siècles includes Prof. Dr. D. Melnikienė’s  continued research into the peculiarities of lexicographical description in Lithuanian bilingual dictionaries after the restoration of independence and raises the question if the emphasis on innovation in the prefaces of dictionaries is indeed essential, or whether it is just a "cosmetic" redevelopment of old dictionaries. In another collective monograph Contracanto. Voci, figure, contesti di un altrove al femminile Prof. D. Melnikienė presents the analysis of scientific work of the most famous French lexicographer and metalexicographer of the 20th century Josette Rey-Debove, overviews her main publications, their significant role in the European applied linguistics. 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. C. Caro Dugo carried out further research into the peculiarities of translation of  K. Donelaitis  “Metai” (“The Seasons”) into the Spanish language and published an article The translation into Spanish of the Lithuanian participle structures in “Summer Toils“ (K. Donelaitis “The Seasons”).

Assoc. Prof. Dr. L. Garbul published the monograph Лексические полонизмы в русском приказном языке первой половины ХVII века// Lexical Polonisms in the Russian chancery language of the first half of the 17th century, which is devoted to the problems of Polish-Russian language contacts and the role the written language of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania played in this process.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. Makarova conducted further research into the area of cognitive linguistics and published several articles and a review for the catalogue of Vilnius University Library in the journal Verbum.

Lect. Dr. A. Belovodskaja analyses anonymous internet parody in the so-called internet folklore context and published articles and delivered presentation on the topic of her research in international conferences in Russia and Byelorussia.

Research in Germanic, Romance and Slavonic Literatures and Cultures. Prof. Dr. D. Melnikienė.  2010–2015.

Prof. Dr. D. Melnikienė researched some aspects of French poetry. Her article Guillaume Apollinaire: “L’ombre su Nord”, published in the collection De l’ordre et de l’aventure. Langue, littérature, francophonie, presented some facts, which have not been analysed in the history of European literature yet, about the anscestors by maternal line of one of the most prominent poet of the beginning of the 20th c. Guillaume Apollinaire, who lived near Vilnius at Arnioniai estate.
In another collection of articles Les voix de l’instant the author makes analysis of the characteristic features of the movement of intuitivism which appeared in the 21st c. in French poetry, and later spread to Europe.
Asist. A. Kučinskienė delivered 3 presentations at international conferences that focused on Juozas Tumas-Vaižganas works with special attention being paid to the writer’s correspondence and looked for links in the works of Spanish and Lithuanian poets.
