National Research Projects
Resolving research reproducibility problems in Artificial Intelligence using Blockchain Technologies (No. P-MIP-21-196). Research Council of Lithuania. Dr E. Filatovas. 2021–2024.
Today, various Artificial Intelligence techniques have solved most real-world challenging decision problems (image analysis, voice and face recognition, planning, scheduling, routing, etc.). However, Artificial Intelligence research domains (as well as other research fields) face with Reproducibility Crisis. Researchers need help reproducing many key results due to the disconnection between publications and used codes, underlying data, parameter settings, etc., as they lack critical details. Solutions that improve code accessibility, data provenance tracking, research transparency, auditing of obtained results, and trust in Artificial Intelligence domains can significantly accelerate algorithm and model development, validation, and transition into real-world applications. Thanks to the features provided by Blockchain Technology, significant progress in resolving the Reproducibility Crisis and full reproducibility can be achieved.
In this context, the project's main objective is to contribute to resolving research reproducibility problems in the Artificial Intelligence field and enhance the research cycle by developing a conceptual model of a blockchain-based decentralized platform, which would be efficient, scalable, interoperable, and adaptable in various Artificial Intelligence research domains.

RESEARCH PROJECTS CARRIED OUT IN 2023
International Research Project
Correcting misperceptions of Covid-19 data: an Innovative E-platform CognitiveSTATS for Training Statistical Intuitions in the General Public (No. 01.2.2-LMT-K-718-05-0042) Research Council of Lithuania. Dr G. A. Melnik-Leroy. 2021/11-2023/09
The objective of this project is to create a prototype of the innovative e-platform for statistical intuition training in the general public, cognitiveSTATS, which will help to correct misperceptions of Covid-19 data. In order to implement this project, two activities have been planned: 1. to carry out scientific research and experiments in order to identify the most important problems in Covid-19 data interpretation (statistical and / or cognitive) and the most effective ways of training statistical intuitions; 2. based on the results of this research, to develop and test a prototype of the public’s statistical intuition training platform. The platform CognitiveSTATS will help people understand some crucial phenomena inherent to the pandemic situation (the spread of the infection, the effectiveness of safety measures and vaccines, the probability to get infected, the economic consequences of the pandemic etc.) and evaluate more critically data and information, spreading in the public sphere, including those shared on social media. In order to ensure the effectiveness and the attractiveness of the platform, three innovative milestones will be used for its development: evidence from cognitive science, principles of gamification, and visualizations of Covid-19 data. In this way, the project aims at educating the society, training their skills, and as a consequence, significantly influencing the attitudes and behavior of the public. The research carried out during the project and the developed prototype of the e-platform will be presented in international-level scientific articles. Given that the project idea is adaptable to future pandemic or crisis situations and that population attitudes and behavior are an essential factor in managing any emergency situation, CognitiveSTATS has a long-term perspective and can be widely applied in a data-driven world.

International Research Projects
COST action CA18231 "Multi3Generation: Multi-task, Multilingual, Multi-modal Language Generation", Member of Managing Committee Dr G. Korvel 2019-2023
Language generation (LG) is a crucial technology if machines are to communicate with humans seamlessly using human natural language. A great number of different tasks within Natural Language Processing (NLP) are language generation tasks, and being able to effectively perform these tasks implies (1) that machines are equipped with world knowledge that can require multi-modal processing and reasoning (e.g. textual, visual and auditory inputs, or sensory data streams), and (2) the study of strong, novel Machine Learning (ML) methods (e.g. structured prediction, generative models), since virtually all state-of-the-art NLP models are learned from data. Moreover, human languages can differ wildly in their surface realisation (i.e. scripts) as well as their internal structure (i.e. grammar), which suggests that multilinguality is a central goal if machines are to perform seamless language generation. Language generation technologies would greatly benefit both public and private services offered to EU citizens in a multilingual Europe and have strong economic and societal impacts.
COST action CA21167 "Universality, diversity and idiosyncrasy in language technology (UniDive)", Member of Managing Committee Dr G. Korvel 2022-2026
Efficient access to the constantly growing quantities of data, especially of language data, largely relies on advances in data science. This domain includes natural language processing (NLP), which is currently booming, to the benefit of many end users. However, this optimization-based technological progress poses an important challenge: accounting for and fostering language diversity. The UniDive Action takes two original stands on this challenge. Firstly, it aims at embracing both inter- and intra-language diversity, i.e. a diversity understood both in terms of the differences among the existing languages and of the variety of linguistic phenomena exhibited within a language. Secondly, UniDive does not assume that linguistic diversity is to be protected against technological progress but strives for both of these aims jointly, to their mutual benefit. Its approach is to: (i) pursue NLP-applicable universality of terminologies and methodologies, (ii) quantify inter- and intra-linguistic diversity, (iii) boost and coordinate universality- and diversity-driven development of language resources and tools. UniDive builds upon previous experience of European networks and projects which provided a proof of concept for language modelling and processing, unified across many languages but preserving their diversity. The main benefits of the Action will include, on the theoretical side, a better understanding of language universals, and on the practical side, language resources and tools covering, in a unified framework, a bigger variety of language phenomena in a large number of languages, including low-resourced and endangered ones.
Main results:
1. Feature space analysis for machine-based recognition.
2. Machine learning algorithms for multiscale data analysis.
3. Machine learning methods for language generation.
4. Efficient deployment of fractal theory to industry applications.

Analysis and Application of Probabilistic and Deterministic Models. Prof. Habil. Dr K. Kubilius. 2023–2024.
Main results:
1. The inverse Euler method for a nonlinear one-dimensional parabolic equation with nonlocal boundary conditions is constructed and analysed. The stability and convergence of the difference scheme in the maximum norm are considered.
2. A geometric proof of the linearity of the growth-rate of the simple connectivity at infinity for Gromov-hyperbolic groups.
3. A new class of one-dimensional fractional stochastic differential equations with stochastic forcing is described, and the conditions for the existence and uniqueness of solutions of such equations are obtained. Moreover, the convergence rate of the implicit Euler approximation scheme for them is established.

Projects Supported by the University Budget
Development of Intelligence Methods and its Applications in Information Technologies. Prof. R. Vaicekauskas, Dr L. Laibinis, Dr A. Raudys, 2021–2025.
Formal foundations and tool support for formal analysis and automated scalable safety verification of railway signaling programs within the SafeCap framework were further developed and applied in practice. Integration of the verification process in SafeCap with the Coq proof assistant has started.
Research (in cooperation with the CyberSecurity Laboratory) on verification of security requirements for critical infrastructures using formal methods and artificial inteligence techniques has been initiated. Doctoral scholarship for this topic was approved by Lithuanian Research Council.
Different applications of formal verification (using the proof assistants Isabelle/HOL, Coq, and Ada Spark) for ensuring the correctness of scientific data processing software in the crystallographic domain were investigated.
Proof-theory of the sequent calculus of temporal logic were developed, showing that loop checks can be restricted to certain paths of backward proof-search trees or sometimes omitted altogether. Also decision procedure for propositional linear discrete tense logic with the unary temporal operators was presented.
A parallel version of multi-objective Bayesian based optimization algorithm was developed. Experiments with expensive objective function will be conducted.
Special classes of Boolean functions (stellar functions and total kernel functions) and corresponding graphs were investigated. Minimal NDFs for all 5-ary functions from these classes were found.
Pareto-optimized custom moving average method for financial time series smoothing, considering both smoothness and accuracy criteria, developed. It evaluates this method against popular moving average techniques, demonstrating its superiority in improving time series forecasting, with potential applications in finance and other domains requiring signal smoothing.
Method for optimizing kidney stone analysis using advanced artificial intelligence algorithms developed. Current methods for analyzing kidney stone composition are limited, leading to potential clinical errors. By integrating AI algorithms, we aim to enhance the accuracy and speed of stone composition determination, facilitating more precise treatment recommendations and reducing complications and costs in kidney surgery. The proposed solution utilizes deep learning models and web-based interfaces for efficient data analysis and presentation, with the potential for future expansion into broader medical applications and international collaborations.

New generation multi-task recognition from satellite image algorithms for climate monitoring. Project No S-MIP-23-44 under the agreement with the Research Council of Lithuania (LMTLT), Assoc. Prof. L. Petkevičius 2023-2026.
Satellite images databases contain large amount of data. Applications in environmental monitoring, spatial modelling, tracking natural resource management or climate change are among those who use remote sensor images. New breakthroughs in computer-vision models have enabled the use of multi-scale image analysis for precisely detecting and segmenting objects in images. In this project, modern recognition methods will be improved and applied to solve problems
of detection, segmentation and prediction of land/water characteristics from satellite imaging. Development of first Lithuanian's multi-satellite multi-scale image database will be derived. Development of a generalized mathematical multi-task learning model that would allow to predict the recognition from combination of multi-scale satellite image to be successfully applied in predictive models, for climate monitoring as well as to identified an outliers search
within complex satellite data in space and time.
Digital image data-driven analysis for tumour microenvironment assessment in breast carcinoma. Postdoctoral (Dovilė Žilėnaitė-Petrulaitienė) project No P-PD-22-060 under the agreement with the Research Council of Lithuania (LMTLT), Assoc. Prof. L. Petkevičius 2022-2024.
Breast cancer (BC) remains one of the most common and deadly cancers worldwide among women. Current clinical practices to predict outcome and therapy response in BC patents are largely based on visual assessment of ER, PR, HER2, and Ki67 expression and histology features. However, due to the heterogeneity of BC, prognosis and treatment responses differ significantly in patents within the same clinical categories. Therefore, further research on biomarkers is needed to improve personalized therapy decisions.
Therefore, in this study, we aim to employ the latest mathematical models of computer vision recognition in AI technologies by extending them to the spatial and temporal dependencies to discover new pathobiological features of the disease in digital pathology images (DPI). Both explicit and implicit deep learning methods to process complex pathological images will be used to extract IR, tumour tissue heterogeneity, and architectural patterns in a retrospective BC cohort of 300 patents. DPI from histology and immunohistochemistry microscopy will be tested. Spatial aspects of biomarkers’ expression in the context of TME will be measured by recently proposed intratumoural heterogeneity and immunogradient metrics. Collagen architecture indicators will be generated by morphometry methods. Implicit TME features will be explored by deep learning techniques. Pathobiology indicators will be extracted from the multidimensional data set and examined for their prognostic value. We expect a new mathematical model for extracting significant biomarkers from complex data, applying models of deep learning methods and its implementation which will be developed from the new knowledge obtained.

Nonhomogeneous stochastic models and their applications in financial and actuarial mathematics. Prof. J. Šiaulys, Assoc. Prof. M. Manstavičius, Assoc. Prof. A. Grigutis, 2020–2023.
All closure properties of heavy-tailed and related classes of distributions were described in detail. The known facts have been supplemented, all the information has been written down in a monograph. The conditions under which the product convolution of generalized subexponential distributions remain in the class of generalized subexponential distributions have been determined. Asymptotic formulas for generalized moments of sums with heavy-tailed random summands have been obtained. The conditions have been established under which the randomly stopped sum of possible differently distributed random variables belongs in the class of generalized subexponential distributions. The equivalent conditions have been established for the convolution to be in the class of strong subexponential distributions. New algorithms were found for calculating survival probabilities in a discrete-time risk model with a special structure. The properties and constructions of bivariate concordance measures were investigated to evaluate the strength of dependence between continuous random variables. Popular Spearman‘s rho, Kendall‘s tau, etc., have been generalized, highlighting the diversity of such measures and paving the way for their statistical applications.

Problems of number theory and investigation of roots of polynomials. Prof. A Drungilas, Prof. A. Garunkštis, Prof. A. Dubickas, Prof. A. Laurinčikas, Prof. E. Manstavičius. 2019–2023.
A lower bound on the mean of squares of distances between the points in two sets in terms of the products of distances between the points in each of those two sets has been obtained. These results imply lower bounds on the pth power of the average distance between the conjugates of an algebraic integer and of the same quantity between the conjugates of a totally real algebraic integer.
Aproximation theorems of analytic functions by Mellin transforms on the Riemann zeta-function, and other universality theorems for zeta-functions were obtained. Distributions of sums of the multiplicative function values taken on the random permutation divisors were explored.

(No. S-MIP-22-81). Prof. Dr R. Garunkštis. 2022–2025.
In 2020 S. M. Gonek, S. W. Graham and Y. Lee formulated the Lindelöf hypothesis for prime numbers and proved that it is equivalent to the Riemann Hypothesis. We showed that their result holds in the Selberg class of L-functions. In 1973 the functional independence of the Riemann zeta-function ζ(s) was proved, i.e., that ζ(s) and its derivatives do not satisfy a certain equation with continuous functions. We obtained a joint version of this theorem. Also, we proved that the Hurwitz zeta function is prime. In addition, we derived the Nevanlinna characteristic for this function.

Theoretical and applied research of differential problems. Assoc. Prof. Dr K. Kaulakytė. 2022–2025.
The steady state Stokes-Brinkman equations in a thin tube structure were considered for given pressure at the inflow and outflow of the tube structure and the no slip boundary condition on the lateral boundary. The complete asymptotic expansion of the problem was constructed. The error estimates were proved. The method of partial asymptotic dimension reduction was introduced for the Stokes-Brinkman equations and justified by an error estimate. This method approximates the main problem by a hybrid dimension problem for the Stokes-Brinkman equations in a reduced domain.
The long-term potentiation of synaptic transmission was modeled as a feature of signal transduction - the bistable behavior in a chain of biochemical reactions with positive feedback.
Asymptotic expansions for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the one–dimensional Sturm–Liouville equation with one classical Dirichlet type boundary condition and two-point nonlocal boundary condition were obtained.
New constructions of high-quality multi-sided surfaces were obtained.

National Research Projects
Research project, supported by the Research Council of Lithuania “Very weak solutions of inverse problems and applications” (No. S-MIP-23-43). Prof. K. Pileckas. 2023-2026.
The objective of this project is to build up a mathematical theory of very weak solutions to inverse problems for linear and nonlinear parabolic type equations with linear and nonlinear side conditions. In 2023 regularity questions for very weak solutions to inverse problems were considered.

In 2023 the steady state non-Newtonian flow, with strain rate dependent viscosity in a thin tube structure, with no slip boundary condition, was considered. Applying the Banach fixed point theorem, the existence and uniqueness of a solution were proved. An asymptotic approximation was constructed and justified by an error estimate. Using COMSOL, the results, concerning blood flow in the left atrium appendage, were obtained for the atrial fibrillation case.
