MAIN SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2015

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Carmen Caro Dugo was awarded Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic  for the meaningful work and significant contribution to a deeper cognition of Spanish and Lithuanian cultures, for the complex translation of the Lithuanian epic poem Seasons (Metai) into the Spanish language.

Research in Structural and Functional Peculiarities of Germanic, Romance, Slavonic and Lithuanian Languages. Assoc. Prof. Dr. A. Janulienė. 2010–2015.

Research has been focused on: the use of metaphors in media and political discourse, evaluating metaphor use in the narrative of presidential New Year greetings of twelve political leaders and in the mission statements of the first 20 European Universities, according to the Webometrics ranking; certain tactics of conflict communication and means of their verbal expression in the repertoire of English and Russian homo loquens involved in conflict communication; cross cultural differences and the way our cultural thought shapes our language; the usage of conjunctive adverbs in Vilnius University law students’ academic essays in their role to achieve text cohesion and conscious or subconscious preference for one of the two major varieties of the English language: British or American et al.

The teaching staff of the department analyse the developmental issues of professional and general competences, apply research results to the teaching practice. This research trend also encompasses the department teachers’ insights into foreign language teaching methods, learners’ assessment and self-assessment, innovative approaches and new technologies, psychological-pedagogical teaching-learning aspects.

Research project Lexico-grammatical variation in advanced learner varieties funded by the Central Research Development Fund of the University of Bremen, Germany, one of eleven “Universities of Excellence” in Germany that compete internationally in top-level research.

Nordplus Horizontal project ILTICS contributes to the development of Nordic and Baltic cooperation between higher and vocational education by sharing best CLIL related practices and results. The results of the ILTICS project are planned to be a CLIL network and a list of recommendations for the implementation of CLIL.

Research in Structural and Functional Peculiarities of the Germanic, Romance, Slavonic and Lithuanian Languages . Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. Banionytė. 2010–2015.

Research focused on compound nouns of German and Baltic origin found in bilingual dictionaries from different centuries. The nouns are grouped according to the parts of speech their constituents belong to as well as their semantic characteristics. Semantic types of sentences in General German compared to Academic German language in the field of biology have been analyzed.

The aim of the study is to discuss opportunities for the development of learning to learn competence in the process of studying foreign languages. Other members of the department also focus on the issues of teaching and learning languages, such as the importance of closed-type tasks to assess students’ receptive language skills, the role of stereotypes in the process of communication.

Research of the Structures (grammatical, lexical, semantic and stylistic peculiarities) of the Romance, Slavic and Lithuanian Languages, their Integration into the Teaching Process and Lexicographic Practice. Prof. Dr. D. Melnikienė. 2010–2015.

Research in Germanic, Romance and Slavonic Literatures and Cultures. Prof. Dr. D. Melnikienė.

Research included analysis of some aspects of bilingual lexicography, such as readability of dictionaries as well as lexicographic description of borrowings, comparison of Lithuanian and French proverbs, acoustic characteristics of vowels caused by primary or secondary interference of phonetic systems of the two languages, impact of inter-Slavonic language ties on the 17th century Russian diplomacy lexis, issues of literary translation from Lithuanian into Spanish.
