Council of the University

The Vilnius University Council is a collegial decision-making body of Vilnius University.

The Council ensures the University’s autonomy and self-governance in alignment with its long-term goals, as well as its experimental, social, cultural, and technological development. It upholds responsibility to the Nation and the State of Lithuania, openness and accountability to society. Alongside the Senate and the Rector, the Council oversees the quality of the University’s activities. Within its competencies as outlined in the Statute, the Council supervises whether the University’s operations and management align with its mission, goals, objectives, and principles, as well as general academic interests and statutory requirements for transparency and public accountability.

The Council is elected for a term of 5 years and consists of 11 members: 5 representatives from the University's academic staff, 4 external (non-University) members, and 2 student representatives (one of whom is an external member).

The current term of the Vilnius University Council took the oath on 17 December 2024.
