Paulius (Povilas) Garmus (1906–1981) was born (some documents state that he was born in 1910) in Būčkiemis village, Prienai county (father – Pranas Garmus). In 1931-1936, he studied at the Academy of Agriculture. In 1936-1938, he was studying at the Higher School of Agriculture in Vienna and acquired the specialisation of agronomist-philotechnician and soil scientist. In Vienna, he defended his doctoral dissertation. In August 1937, he married Olga Šepetytė. In 1938-1940, he worked as a lecturer at Vilnius Pedagogical Institute. As of 1940, he started teaching at the Faculty of Forestry and the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Vilnius University. His personal file kept in the archives of Vilnius University contains an entry noting he was kept in the NKVD prison and later released (in 1945). Under the Order of 7 July 1952 of the Rector, Paulius Garmus was dismissed because the course of physical geography he taught was delivered at an “insufficient ideological-political level” (based on Article 47c of the Labour Code). He later continued his work as an educator and researcher in the field of agriculture. In 1953-1957, worked in the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1957-1976, he taught at the Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture. In 1962, he became an associate professor. He produced works on the reaction, carbonation, humus content and soil-forming rocks of soils in Lithuania.
