Vladas Buitvydas was born in Narbučiai village, Svėdasai rural district, Rokiškis county. In 1935 he started a primary school in Svėdasai, which he finished in 1940. After the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania, difficult life made him change places of residence and schools. First he went to Panevėžys boys’ gymnasium, later he moved to Vilnius and went to a number of gymnasia until in 1947 he finished Vilnius gymnasium for adults and became a student at the Faculty of Chemistry of Vilnius University. His studies were disrupted in 1949, when during mass deportation operation ‘The Surf’ he was deported to Irkutsk region in Siberia. He was released from exile in 1957. Having tasted Soviet reality, Vladas took advantage of the repatriation of the Poles from the Soviet Union to Poland, which was underway at the time, and left for Poland.
