Vytautas Saveika

Vytautas Saveika was born into a family of farmers in Lazdijai. He finished primary school and a gymnasium in Lazdijai. In 1945, he became a student at the Medical Faculty of Vilnius University. While at the university, he was actively engaged in sports: he took part in students’ games, represented the Medical Faculty at basketball and hiking competitions. At the same time, Vytautas was active professionally by taking part in students’ scientific groups for surgery, internal diseases, and therapy. His studies were disrupted in the last year: on 25 March 1949, Vytautas and his parents were deported to Irkutsk region. He was released from exile ten years later.
