Sofija Kutkauskaitė-Kiržgalvienė was born into a farmers’ family in Gaidamiškiai/ės village, Leliūnai rural district, Utena county. She went to primary schools of Gečionys and Utena rural district and, having finished six forms, became a pupil of a gymnasium of Utena in 1939. In 1945, she finished the gymnasium and became a student at the Stomatology Department of the Medical Faculty of Vilnius University. Her studies were disrupted by deportation to Irkutsk region in 1949. In 1957, Sofija was released from exile and soon returned to Lithuania.
