Student Judita Ščerbakovaitė (1914–1994) was born in the town of Simnas on 1 May 1914. In 1932, she finished Virbalis Jewish gymnasium with instruction in Hebrew. In 1935–1936 academic year, she became a student of philology at the Faculty of Humanities of Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas. She studied philology for a year and then radically changed her direction: from 1936 to 1940, she studied chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Vytautas Magnus University, and from 1940 continued her chemistry studies at Vilnius University. She was expelled from Vilnius University on 19 September 1941 along with other Jewish students on the basis of the order of the Higher Education Department of the Board of Education, which was subordinate to the Nazis.
