Saulius Šterninas (1915–?) was born in Vilnius. In 1928, he graduated from a primary school in Valkininkai (his parents had a pharmacy in Valkininkai). From 1928 to 1931, Šterninas studied at the Dzientelskienė Gymnasium in Vilnius and from 1931 to 1933 – at Luckas Mojžiešius Griklichas Coeducational Gymnasium. From 1935 to 1939, he studied at the Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Stefan Batory University. In 1939, he applied to study at the Pharmacy Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and was accepted. In 1940, Šterninas applied to study at the Pharmacy Department of the Faculty of Medicine of Vytautas Magnus University and was accepted. At the same time, he also applied to study at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Vilnius University and was also successful. Based on archival documents of Vilnius University, Šterninas chose to continue his studies at Vilnius University. However, it was not possible for him to complete his studies because, on 19 September 1941, he was expelled from the university on the basis of the Order of 17 September 1941 of the Department of Higher Education of the Board of Education, which was subordinate to the National Socialists. The Holocaust Victims Database of Yad Vashem says that Šterninas perished during the Holocaust and was recorded as Shaul Sternin from Valkininkai.
