Kakariekaitė Elena (1927-?) was born in Dieveniškės, Vilnius county, into the family of Jonas and Jozefina Kakariekas. In 1939 she graduated from a primary school and in the same year entered Vytautas Magnus Gymnasium in Vilnius. Later she transferred to Vilnius II Girls’ Gymnasium, which she successfully completed in 1945. In July of the same year, she applied for admission to the Department of History of the Faculty of History and Philology at Vilnius University. The application was positively evaluated. According to the database Lithuanians in Siberia, she was arrested in 1946 and sent to Komi. The reason for the exile was the student’s activity in an underground “Lithuanian youth nationalist organisation, Lithuanian People’s Council”, which was exposed in March 1946 and was active in Vilnius. According to Soviet security services, it was aimed at overthrowing the Soviet government. At the time of her arrest, Elena was in possession of documents from this youth organisation. The fellow accused – 19 people, some of whom were also students at Vilnius University – were also honoured with memory diplomas.
