Professor (Indo-European and Baltic linguistics)

Professor of Vilnius University is a recognised leader in their field of research and studies in Lithuania; it is the highest teaching position at the University. The professor’s responsibilities include scientific research and/or experimental development activities as well as disseminating their results at national and international levels, research-based studies, contributing to the training of researchers and lecturers, providing expert recommendations, carrying out educational activities, educating society at large and/or disseminating achievements of culture. 

Duties and responsibilities

The professor is expected to be able to do scientific research of international and high national level individually or in a team with other researchers in the field of Indo-European and Baltic Linguistics and will publish the results of his/her research in high-ranking scholarly outlets. The professor will submit proposals for research projects ensuring the availability of necessary resources for the purpose and will implement them. He/she will convene teams of researchers and lead them. The professor will teach both introductory and specialised courses in Indo-European Linguistics, Baltic Comparative Grammar, courses on Historical Linguistics etc. in both Lithuanian and English, and at both study levels, he/she will also develop educational materials for studies. He/she is expected to be able to supervise research projects and theses of students at all study levels, also doctoral dissertations and post-doctoral projects when necessary. As an expert in his/her field, the professor will provide insights and recommendations to the society. He/she will maintain professional relations with his/her colleagues abroad and will take an active part in national and international associations in his/her field. The professor will promote Baltic studies, Philology and Linguistics. He/she will implement other functions assigned to a professor related to studies, study materials development, research, improvement of qualifications, and management, as stipulated in legal acts of Vilnius University.

Required qualifications:

PhD or equivalent in Humanities.

Supervision of a doctoral student and/or postdoctoral intern.

Ability to teach in Lithuanian and English.

In case the candidates are of equal standing, the following will be considered an advantage:

Experience of teaching Indo-European and Baltic Linguistics courses in Lithuanian and English.

Experience of teaching other Linguistic courses.

Experience of teaching historical grammar courses of other ancient Indo-European languages ​​(Hittite, Avesta, Ancient Greek, Latin, etc.).

Experience in leading international scientific projects.

Starting at: 01 September 2025, duration of contract – 5 years.

Workload: 1 full-time post. 

Official salary: 3920 EUR (before tax)
