Applied Research of Marketing Factors at Sustainable Economic Development Environment. Prof. E. Bartkus, Dr. B. Toluba.

A company operating in a small domestic market, international trade can provide economies of scale in production, company growth, and profit growth, persistence in the market and job creation. It is therefore important to carry out research of a complex organization and a potential market by applying a systematic approach to evaluation. This objective was addressed through the following tasks: analyzing organizational development strategy theoretical aspects are described in the strategy implementation and external environmental analysis process, to assess the company’s external and internal environment, creating a universal penetration of the organization’s choice of foreign market strategy for a theoretical model.
The theory analysis of concepts and structure of country image and higher education image was conducted using the attitude theory approach which enabled to define certain components and dimensions of image. After theory analysis original hypothetical structural model of country image manifestation in higher education context was constructed. The structural model of country image manifestation in higher education context which identifies the essential components of country image in higher education context together with its dimensions and interrelationships can be considered as a complex means of measurement of country image manifestation in higher education context that provides an opportunity to evaluate the country image regardless of the country, to identify the strengths and consistently develop the strategies of country image designing in higher education context.

Several problems regarding Lithuania’s landscape could be distinguished: a) problems of land parcels; b) problems of forests; c) problems of protected territories and natural frameworks; d) problems of the Curonian Spit; e) problems of coastal sands. Self-contained renaturalization of Lithuanian landscape, increase in biodiversity and the implementation of programs from the strategic documents of the government, could lead to at least partial restoration of the impoverished Lithuanian landscape and increase of its stability.

Gender Aspects in Economy and Labour Markets. Dr. I. Kiaušienė, Prof. D. Štreimikienė.

Seeking to shape effective policies to combat with gender inequality and to measure achieved progress in this area the indicators of gender inequality play an important role. There are many indicators of inequality representing different aspects on gender inequality. However, it is necessary to have one indicator which allows assessing gender inequality in all the aspects to compare countries in terms of level of gender inequality. The validity of certain indicators is questionable. There is a need for a new indicator, covering all issues of gender inequalities.   New indicator is based on multi-criteria analysis and normalization of several the most important gender inequality indicators being applied by various international institutions dealing with gender issues. The countries ranking according integrated index of gender equality gives the worst score for Lithuania (8th position) though according to GEI Lithuania is ranked third. According to the EU GEI Lithuania is also being ranked among the best performing countries, the fourth. According to IHDI and GGI Lithuania is also ranked fifth.

The gender aspects in economy and labor market were investigated. The gender equality measurement tools were developed and applied in assessing labor market in terns of gender inequalities in Lithuanian and other EU member states.

Language and Reasoning. Doc. D. Satkauskaitė, Prof. H.-H. Drossiger. 2010–2012.

Audovisual translation
Further research in the field of audiovisual translation was carried out, touching upon localisation as (mis)communication among cultures, translation for dubbing in terms of visual phonetics, synchrony in dubbed animated films and text compression.

Localisation as (mis)communication among cultures was discussed. Some cases of localisation in Lithuania when US-based products were localized were investigated. The question to be answered is: why in some cases the process of localisation was not successful and localisation as an act of communication turned into the act of miscommunication.
Translation for dubbing in terms of Visual Phonetics was analysed. The research starts from the comparative analysis of the inventory of English and Lithuanian bilabial consonants, as well as a bilabial following vowel or diphthong, whether it is close, open or rounded. Recommendations of translation for dubbing from English into Lithuanian in terms of visually adequate bilabials and them following vowels or diphthongs are produced. Apart from dubbing aspect of phonetics the analysis on different levels i. e. phonetic, dramatic and semantic synchrony in animated films dubbed in Lithuanian was carried out.
Text compression is another subject that is widely discussed in audiovisual translation. It is employed in subtitling because of both the requirement to provide a very short target text by employing a restricted number of symbols allowed to be used per one subtitle, and necessity to express only the main idea of the utterances. Taking linguistic aspects into account, this translation strategy comprises either grammatical or lexical ways to shorten the text without destroying its meaning. Grammatical compression in film translation was examined in both documentary and science fiction film translations.

Translation
The analytical research concerning theoretical problems of language comparison, translation and lexical equivalence between two languages and cultures was done.

The problem of translation unit in technical texts was discussed. It was found out that, differently from other types of texts as poetry or advertisements where translation unit could be considered as the whole text, the translation unit in technical texts is conveyed by words or phrases. The attention was also paid to culture specific aspects in translation, the main stress being laid on the perspective of non-equivalence or untranslatability of diminutives, phraseological units and expressive curses translating from Lithuanian into English. Moreover, the phenomenon of realia as definition of the term and scope of the concept was analysed. The classification of these specific lexical units was discussed; the factors that influence the method of translation were distinguished. Peculiarities and problems of translation of lexems that form specific megaconcepts (e. g. megaconcept FLUID) were also studied. The analysis of specific German and Lithuanian word families and word fields was carried out. The main focus of the research was laid on the analysis of the nature and motivation of conceptual metaphors that are related to the expression of emotions in German and Lithuanian.
Moreover, in the context of market globalization, translation theory and sociolinguistics are bridged by concentrating on the pragmatics of advertisement slogan translation. On the grounds of previous researches in the field of the linguistics of electronic media, investigations concerning the interaction of various types of media environments, culturally specific target audiences and the global uniformity of advertising campaigns were conducted.
Not only translation but also interpretation theory and practice were touched upon. The historical development of interpretation in various countries starting from ancient Egypt and finishing with European Union was presented focusing on the social status and profession prestige of the interpreters.
Literary translation is another area that received attention among the researchers of the department as it requires not only creativity but also intuition, knowledge and cognitive perspective. The role of cognitive processes and phenomena (e. g. metaphorization and metonymy) in creation and translation of literary texts was revealed. An interesting area of embracing medieval aesthetics and metaphysical symbolism was explored. In the texts, an obscure sign is to be deciphered by the reader who is engaged in a kind of intellectual game: to read the riddle; the use of periphrases, metaphorical kennings and prosopopoeia help the Anglo-Saxon poet cloak the genuine meaning.

The findings of the research mentioned above were presented at international conferences, published in several journals and conference proceedings.

Stucture and Development of Self-awareness in Literature. Doc. A. Krasnovas, Prof. J. Krūminienė. 2003–2012.

The principal focus of the research is on English Modernist literature as a hermeneutic experience: reading viewed as an event, a meaning-producing process resulting in the productivity of the hermeneutic circle. Among the main interests is the structure and operation of the epiphanic mechanism based on the reflexivity of experience located in the movement of language.
Dealing with the translation from English into Lithuanian the problems of slang translation in literary texts in another controversial issue that was discussed. In the majority of cases stylistic compensation, literal translation and softening is applied. A model for slang translation was suggested.
Another theme of research is the complex phenomenon of self-translation. In self-translation parody, coincidence, patterning, allusion, alliteration, anagram and spoonerism are employed as major stylistic devices. The translation of alliterations, allusions and the cases of parody were analyzed by applying the comparative analytical instrumentarium and relying on the theoretical insights extended within the frame of the theory of literary translation.

Development and Analysis of Artificial Intelligent Systems. Application of Intelligent Methods to Investigation of Financial Markets. Financial Risk Research. Research group: Prof. R. Simutis, Prof. V. Sakalauskas, Doc. D. Krikščiūnienė, Dr. S. Masteika, Prof. G. Garšva, Prof. S. Girdzijauskas, Dr. V. Moskaliova, Dr. D. Dilijonas, PhD Student P. Danėnas.

The main topics in 2012 were investigation of various anomalies which cause deviations from the most widely discussed laws of the financial markets - the efficient market hypothesis. We explore possibilities to identify the day-of-the-week effect in emerging financial markets by applying Hurst exponent measure which is primarily designed for identification and measurement of long range dependence and information efficiency of time series. For this reason we try to evaluate the accuracy and find the most appropriate hierarchical clustering methods for binary data.
Another interesting research was devoted to the dynamics of pension fund portfolio by using adaptive Powersim simulation models. There is a need to create advanced tools that could help the unprofessional investors, who make up the majority of pension fund customers, to make well informed decisions and reduce the potential risk. The model, proposed by the authors, introduces adaptive and dynamic variables used in the portfolio simulation. Volatile values of return rate, contributions and fees are used in calculations. The results of research show the advantages of such method over traditional spreadsheets.
A hybrid method for classification of companies by their insolvency combining feature selection, classification techniques and periodical “sliding-window” principle using discriminant analysis based expert evaluations is developed. A new hybrid classification technique for large-scale classification combining Particle Swarm Optimization with linear SVM selection and optimization is proposed and developed. Intelligent DSS based on proposed techniques and financial standards is further developed. A research of modern development methodologies for complex large-scale and multicontext systems such as Domain Driven Design and Feature Driven Development, aimed at the development of large intelligent decision support systems, was also performed, using developed DSS framework as case study. Architectural models for developed framework, based on these methodologies, were also created. Results of these studies were presented at international conferences: 15th conference on Business Information Systems in Vilnius, Lithuania; conference on Computational Science (ICCS 2012), Omaha, USA; 14th conference on Enterprise Information Systems (ICEIS 2012), Wrocław, Poland, 18th conference on Information and Software Technologies (ICIST 2012), Kaunas, Lithuania. The paper Credit risk evaluation modeling using evolutionary linear SVM classifiers and sliding window approach presented at conference in Omaha was awarded the 2012 Green Group Award of Computational Finance and Business Intelligence for the best paper in the workshop.

Enterprise Modeling and Knowledge Based Information Systems Engineering Reseach. Research group: Prof. S. Gudas, Doc. A. Lopata, Prof. R. Butleris, R. Brundzaitė. PhD Student A. Stravinskienė, PhD Student I. Veitaitė.

The main topics in 2012 were investigation of Model Driven Architecture (MDA) which is one of the most widely used Information Systems (IS) development methodologies thus focusing on functional requirements acquisition and informatikon systems development processes. MDA is a theoretical framework which specifies guidelines of CIM, PIM, PSM models creation and their reciprocity only. The presented Knowledge-Based MDA approach combines the main components of traditional MDA and the best practices of Knowledge-Based Information Systems Engineering (ISE). The main advantage of proposed method by our research group is that problem domain knowledge acquainted at user requirements acquisition and business modelling stages are validated against formal criteria, thus reducing empirical factors that could negatively impact the whole IS development process.

Development of Digital Technologies in Phonetics and Voice Recognition. Research group: Doc. P. Žvinys, Dr. K. Driaunys, Doc. V. Rudžionis.

We continued the investigations of foreign language recognition engine adaptation methods for the recognition of Lithuanian voice commands. New adaptation methods for the contexts of phonemes “k”, “r” and “l”were proposed. These methods allowed increasing recognition in these contexts by more than 10% in average. We took part in the development of voice controlled wheelchair for the people with motoric disabilities with the team from Kaunas University of Technology. The proposed method uses the control engine installed in the external server and enables to implement wider set of recognition algorithms comapring with the embedded systems. The proposed method also is cheaper to realize from the economical point of view.

Applied Research in E-commerce, E-learning, E-business and E-government. Research group: Prof. V. Sakalauskas, Doc. D. Krikščiūnienė, PhD Student S. Strigūnaitė.

The research results summarize evaluation of intelligent models based on neural network and hierarchical fuzzy analysis. The cooperation links with the partner University in Brno (Czech Republic) enable widening of the research scope in the area of complex event processing and performance analysis of business processes. The topics of performance evaluation of interdisciplinary virtual teams have been summarized in the doctoral dissertation prepared for defence.
The results have been presented at a seminar in Masaryk University and University of Technology in Brno, in the ISI-listed proceedings of the international conference and  the journal indexed in international data bases.

Modelling of Unsustainable Economic Situations. Research Group: Prof. S.Girdzijauskas, Dr. V. Moskaliova, PhD Student A. Mialik.

Primarily the problem of market saturation and economic paradoxes arises, while analyzing unstable financial situations. The research of market saturation together with application of logistical analysis allows merging contradictory areas of modern economy theory. Through logistical analysis recently discovered paradoxes cause crisis situations in economy. However, it is hard to identify and properly assess them because of their unusual behavior. If you want to understand the operation of economical paradoxes, it is necessary to fathom out the market capacity term, to distinguish closed and open market, to understand market saturation phenomenon.
Modelling capital growth, it was determined that saturated markets behave differently from unsaturated ones. Increasing profitability paradox causes economic bubbles, and debt trap paradox – suddenly increasing debt service weight and debtor bankruptcy. Logistical analysis allows to explain not only the causes of crisis, but also to prefigure means of crisis reduction.

Structure and Development of Literary Self-awareness. Prof. A. Krasnovas, Prof. J. Krūminienė, Prof. G. Bankauskaitė-Sereikienė. 20032012.

In 2012, the researchers in this scientific field analysed the processes of the modernization of Lithuanian literature focusing on the reception of literary heritage, the poetics and rhetoric of fictional texts and public discourse (synchronic and diachronic aspects).
They carried out the analysis on the following topics: the role of naming and unnaming in Jurgis Savickis’ and Antanas Vaičiulaitis’ novellas; transformation in Antanas Vaičiulaitis’ fairy-tales; the motifs of “Song of Songs“ as reflected in Bernardas Brazdžionis’ lyrics; M. K. Čiurlionis’ literary heritage; the problems of Lithuanian theatre in Balys Sruoga’s literary criticism; ironic critical approach to literature, culture and society reflected in the magazine Vapsva (Wasp) (1928–1932); Kostas Ostrauskas’ literary criticism; the image of a woman in the periodicals of the first Lithuanian Republic; Gintaras Patackas’ poems about Kaunas cafes, coffeemania and “cafe flowers”, or an ironically playful discourse about the poet and poetry; Jurgis Kunčinas” Glisonokilpa (Glison’s Loop): a tale about the novel turned into stew;  expression of transgradience in Bronius Radzevičius’ selected novels LinkDebesijos (Toward the Cloudland); types of existence in Ričardas Gavelis’ novel Vilniauspokeris (Vilnius Poker); colour symbolism in the Lithuanian Romantic poetry; cookery gide based on the 1st century Roman banquet described by Marcus Valerius Martialis.

Linguistic and Extralinguistic Parameters of Language. Prof. O. Poliakovas, Prof. E. Lassan, Prof. H. H. Drößiger. 20082012.

In 2012, the researchers in this scientific field made scientific attempts at constructing the linguistic and extralinguistic characteristics of the written and spoken texts (with special attention paid to the dialectal discourse) by applying the analytical principles from the fields of  sociolinguistics, perceptual dialectology, geolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, stylistics, rhetoric and semantics.

In 2012, the researchers carried out the analysis on the following topics: the conceptualisation of the cultural schemes within the paradigm of geolinguistics; the conceptualisation of the Standard language usage regions from the point of view of the young members of the Lithuanian language community; onomastikon of language variants, i.e., the horinzontal and vertical division of language reality from the point of view of the ordinary members of language community; conscious and unconscious attitudes to discourse variants (standard and dialect marked expression); exploration of visual multi-modal conceptual metaphor in advertisements; wine conceptualisation in the printed advertisements from the perspective of cognitive linguistics; antropomorphic  metaphors of time in contemporary Lithuanian poetry;  personifying antropomorphic metaphors in the anthology Žemė (The Earth); the lexeme “grąža“ from the perspective of corpus linguistics;  investigation of the spectrum and duration of the Lithuanian and Latvian low vowels; analysis of the surnames of the Veliuona area;  analysis of the toponymy of the Labūnava area; analysis of the graphemic euphemia in the Electronic Media; analysis of the Lithuanian slang; tense usage and tense translation in English and Lithuanian scientific texts; the rhetoric of the Lithuanian social advertisements.
