Research Council of Lithuania. Raising of the "New Man" in Soviet schools: the case of Lithuania. 2019–2022. Research leader: Assoc. Prof. Dr. I. Stonkuvienė. Researcher: Prof. Dr. I. Kestere, Dr. A. Naudžiūnienė.

The aim of the project is to research a process of raising a "New Man" in the Lithuanian schools during the late Soviet period. It seeks with the assistance of interdisciplinary approach (combining history, anthropology, educational sciences etc.) to present the notion of "New man" and its genesis both in theoretical and comparative contexts. The analysis of textbooks, education programs, plans and methodical documents, pedagogical press and other historical sources will be implemented, and then in the scope of this project we will analyse how formation of the "New Soviet Man" was influenced by the ideological clichés and educational ideals of that time, which are reflected in the organisational process of educational system, in the educational content, its principles and methods. While analysing transformation of Soviet school we aim to determine, if educational elements, which have formed Soviet Man, were transferred to educational practices of post-Soviet schools in Lithuania.

Erasmus + project: Improvement of Teaching Techniques by Eye Tracking in Technology Enhanced Classrooms (KA2 - Cooperation for Innovation and the Exchange of Good Practices). Coordinator – Ankara University. Institutional coordinator – prof. Valentina Dagienė, Vilnius University. 2017–2020.

During technological changes, teachers are the primary users of technology in the classroom, and they are much more critical than the technology that is being used. Many previous studies revealed that teachers do not have the necessary skills for using these new technological devices and they try to escape from using technologies in their classes. The expected impact of our project is to fulfill this lack of knowledge of teachers. By using the results of this project; teachers will be enabled to make use of new technology in their lessons. The indirect beneficiaries of this project are children that are educated intechnology enabled classrooms, which become highly popular in many of the European countries. Key personnel of the P2 DamaSistem; Ozgur ESEN is currently studying PhD in Instructional Technology. Since these research results will be easily applied to the teaching practice, it will have a very high impact on education. Therefore, the results of the project will be easily published in high impact journals and presented in high quality conferences and on the Erasmus+ dissemination platform.

Erasmus + project: Fostering Accessible Study Technologies (FAST): Accessible Learning Management System in Humanities and Social Sciences (KA2 - Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices). Projects Supported by University Budget

Children’s and Youth Development and Supporting Environment: Assessment, Analysis of Interaction, Education. Prof. R. Jusienė, Assoc. Prof. G. Gintilienė 2017–2020.

In 2019, the longitudinal data set of children’s emotional and behavioural problems and self-regulatory abilities was analysed and two articles prepared and published. Results on toddler’s emotional and behavioural problems as related to delivery mode and maternal characteristic were published in Child and Youth Care Forum. Results on preschoolers’ self-regulation as related to their sleep problems were published in Infant and Child Development. The methods for further study on developmental interactions of self-regulation and sleep problems were developed.

The results of study of relationships between the of Dyslexia Risk Questionnaire (DRQ) scores in pre-primary age and the abilities, necessary for acquisition of reading and writing skills, as well as reading and writing skills in the 1st Grade was published. The results showed that the estimates of Dyslexia Risk

Questionnaire (DRQ), completed by pre-primary teachers and parents while children were attending pre-primary education group, are related to prognostic indicators of reading and writing difficulties in the first grade.

Original Parental Involvement Questionnaire (PIQ) was developed and updated. The study of psychometric properties of this instrument involved parents and teachers of 94 children. The primary results showed that parent involvement consists of four factors: parents and teacher communication (parents-teachers), parental help for a child while studying at home (parents-children), parents and class activities (parents-class) and parental control (PK). PIQ predictive validity for reading skills and text comprehension in primary classes needs further investigation that is planned in 2020.

Principles of Cognitive Processing. Dr. R. Stanikūnas. 2016–2020.

Influence of stimulus colour and attention on temporal parameters of image extinction in the Troxler effect. 2019. Visual system is constructed in a paradoxical way. We need to stabilize gaze at one object in the space in order to perceive fine details, but if we fixate the gaze for too long all the visual word will disappear. The first report was by Troxler in 1804, when he described the perceptual disappearance of stimuli in the periphery while fixating a centrally located stimulus. In our experiments, we investigated the parameters of the image disappearance and recovery in a stabilized image by manipulating the color of the peripheral stimuli. Stimuli were eight coloured rings, four cardinal colours: red, yellow, green and blue, four intermediate colorus: orange, yellow-green, cyan and violet. Subjects were seated in front the computer with immobilized head by headrest and fixated gaze at the central stimuli while paying attention to color ring in the periphery. They were asked to press the buttons when color ring disappeared and reappeared during stimulus presentation, which lasted 2 minutes. During experiments subject’s eye gaze was tracked by eye-tracking equipment SMI REDn. Subjects experienced complete image disappearance for all colored rings. Fastest fading was experienced for violet and cyan rings with average fading time about 20 seconds, while red, yellow and green rings were most robust to fading with average time about 70 seconds. In addition, all subjects experienced that after first disappearance of image it appears again and this sequence is repeated several times. Intervariability was established between subjects in how many image fluctuations they experienced in one trial. In addition, some subjects were able to fixate gaze steadier, while others experienced gaze drift, saccades and blinks. Our results reveal correlation between saccade, blink and image recovery.

Research Council of Lithuania. Social Integration Challenges of Children with Cochlear Implants in Lithuania (S-MIP-17-111). Prof. Dr.Eugenijus Lesinskas. 2017–2019.

The project was aimed at the analysis of social integration problems of children with cochlear implants by using bio-psycho-social theoretical approach and combining different research methods. Results of all the data gathered during the project were summarized in 2019. For the first time etiological profile of hearing loss (causes of deafness) of children with cochlear implants was established in Lithuania. More than half of examined cases had non-syndromic (hereditary) hearing disorder. Only 14% of all cases the cause of hearing loss remained unknown. In previously conducted research, 30–40% of causes of hearing loss remained unknown.

Results of document analysis and qualitative interviews with experts and parents have shown that Lithuanian cochlear implantation system lacks integration between health, social care and education systems. Limited availability of necessary services after the implantation and lack of information about such services can be named as one of the most important challenges of social integration of children with implants. Implementation of provided by authors recommendations, based on scientific research and best practices of other countries, would allow for better social integration of children with cochlear implants in Lithuania.
