A biomimetic microfluidic system and a method are provided for producing target biological substances. The system comprises a first channel extending from a first input to a first output along a longitudinal dimension. The first channel is configured to receive at least one first biological composition at a first channel flow rate. The at least one first biological composition comprises a biological source material capable of producing target biological substances. The system further comprises a second channel substantially parallel to the first channel, extending from a second input to a second output along the longitudinal dimension. The second channel is configured to selectively receive at least one second biological composition at a second channel flow rate. The system further comprises a separation barrier between the first channel and the second channel. The separation barrier has a plurality of microchannels forming a fluid communication path between the first and second channels.
