Optical frequency converter based on III-n semiconductors

Sukurta: 04 February 2025
Kryptis: Puslaidininkiai

The present invention discloses a non-linear optical device for effective optical frequency conversion. The device action is based on polarity inverted waveguides and coupling compensated quasi-phase-matching (PIC-QPM). The device represents a directional coupler formed by two strongly coupled planar GaN waveguides, placed adjacent to each other, with a thin layer in-between them. The medium of the waveguides comprises polarity inversion. After the pump optical wave injection, symmetric, or antisymmetric supermodes, or both of them with modified propagation constants are excited in the directional coupler, resulting in the generation of second harmonic optical supermodes. The planar polarity inversion of the waveguide medium has been demonstrated to have a major contribution to the enhancement of the spatial overlap integral of the fields of the pump and the generated second harmonic supermodes resulting in a remarkable improvement of the generation effectivity. The device makes also possible the generation of the higher number supermodes of the second harmonic (TM12ω, TM22ω, etc).
