VU Strengthens Its Position in the International QS Subject Rankings

53009254907 0a378fb61f kIn the latest global university subject rankings, ‘QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025’, Vilnius University (VU) has achieved exceptionally good results, improving its position in several study fields. This year, VU is ranked in 13 study fields—the highest number in recent years.

The University continues to maintain strong positions in the humanities, with the field of linguistics retaining the highest ranking, 251–300th in the world. The study field of modern languages also made a successful debut, immediately ranking in the 301–350 category.


In the area of social sciences and management, the results of the study field of economics and econometrics and the field of business and management studies improved. The field of economics and econometrics rose to 351–400th place worldwide (previously ranking at 401–450th), and the field of business and management studies significantly improved its position, rising from 501–550th to 451–500th place.


The study field of law remains among the top 301–350 in the world, while the field of politics and international relations retains its 301–400th position.


Studies in physics and astronomy (401–450th) and chemistry (551–600th) have been evaluated exceptionally well in the area of natural sciences. In the area of engineering, chemistry engineering (401–450th) and materials sciences (401–550th) achieved the best results.


This year, VU’s ranking results in terms of the number of ranked fields were the best of the last five years – as many as 13 study fields have been ranked among the best in the world. Among them, the global top 300 includes linguistics (251–300th), the top 400 – modern languages (301–350th), law (301–350th), politics and international relations (301–400th), and economics and econometrics (351–400th). The fields that made the top 500 and below list are chemistry engineering (401–450th), physics and astronomy (401–450th), materials sciences (401–550th), business and management studies (451–500th), and biological sciences (451–500th).


QS World University Rankings by Subject are among the most prestigious university rankings in the world. The 2025 rankings analysed the reputation and scientific achievements of more than 5,200 institutions, of which 1,747 universities were included in the rankings of 55 study fields and five areas of research and studies.


Universities are ranked according to the following criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, and h-index, which aims to determine the productivity of researchers and the global impact of their work.
