VU is Invited to Join ITU

VU is Invited to Join ITUHoulin Zhao, Secretary-General of ITU (International Telecommunication Union) of the United Nations Organization visited VU and had a meeting with prof. Arturas Žukauskas, Rector of VU.

The Secretary-General was impressed with modern, developed university infrastructure, highly equipped laboratories, competent and motivated researchers. Mr Zhao Houle invited the VU Rector to consider the possibility of membership in ITU. Currently, the organization has more than 90 academic institutions.

Rector A. Žukauskas noted, that "This visit of the leader of so influential global telecommunication organization to Vilnius University will facilitate promotion of our national scientific achievements in telecommunication area globally, will increase awareness of Lithuanian scientists, facilitate generation of new research projects".

International Telecommunications Union, with its headquarters in Geneva, is a specialized institution of the United Nations. It was founded as the International Telegraph Union in 1865. Paris. For nearly 145 years, ITU coordinates the global use of the radio spectrum, promotes international co-operation in relation to the choice of satellites orbits, contributed to the improvement of communication systems in developing countries.
