VU Doctors Overcome New Challenges
Sukurta: 24 August 2015
In 18 August doctors of Ophthalmology and Neurosurgery Centers of the Vilnius University Hospital performed the optic nerve fenestration or decompression surgery. So far it was the first surgery of the type in Lithuania and in the Baltic States.
The first such operative procedure worldwide was described by Louis De Weck - French ophthalmologist in 1872.
This surgical procedure is performed in order to reduce the compression of the optic nerve. In modern medical studies, the optic nerve fenestration, or decompression is performed in order to stop vision loss or it's worsening coursed by increased intracranial pressure. Doctors identify it as a rather complicated surgery and call for close cooperation of neurosurgeons and ophthalmologists.
