UMinho Hosts a Conference on AI and Digital Storytelling

The programme includes socially relevant topics that will be discussed in lectures and panels presented by professors from Arqus universities, such as innovations in breast cancer imaging, discussed by Latifa Fakri-Bouchet (University of Lyon 1); the use of artificial intelligence in geospatial visualisation and data analysis, presented by Nina Polous (University of Graz); and the contribution of Lucas J. Ruiz Díaz (University of Granada), who will share experiences on AI in the context of an Arqus Community of Practice.

How can artificial intelligence be used to collect, filter, manipulate and analyse textual and multimodal data and weave it into engaging narratives? This is the motto of the 2nd International Conference on Data and Digital Humanities (DDHUM), taking place between 12 and 13 December at the University of Minho’s School of Letters, Arts and Human Sciences, in Braga, Portugal, and also online.

Four dozen speakers are expected from 15 countries, such as Austria, Finland, USA, Peru, Brazil, India and Australia. Sílvia Araújo, from UMinho’s Centre for Humanistic Studies, is coordinating the event, with support from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the Arqus European University Alliance.

Speakers from 15 countries will focus on practical, innovative and interdisciplinary artificial intelligence applications.

The agenda will explore key current issues such as digital disinformation, anti-scientific discourse, gender bias in AI models, AI’s impact on education and social interaction, and ethical and innovative applications of digital technologies to tackle global challenges such as climate change and cultural preservation.

Crossing Academia, Culture and Society

The DDHUM aims to promote the exchange of innovative practices in the use of artificial intelligence, with applications in multimodal and textual contexts, in both academia and society. The first edition, held in 2023, derived from the European scientific projects PortLinguE, DIAL4U and SimpleText. It has already established Braga as an essential meeting point for exploring the intersection between data, humanities and technology.
