Now, their number has reached record highs – in 2024, 27 Lithuanian-origin students from the USA and Canada are coming to Lithuania.

During their five-week stay in Lithuania, the students will have the opportunity not only to complete an internship in their field of study and improve their language skills but also to immerse themselves in the country’s daily and cultural life.

Monika Jurevicius, a future trainee at the Sports Division of the Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT), says that she and her entire family came to Lithuania to visit their relatives. The Chicago-based student also thought that this year was the right time to join the LISS programme.

"There is a large Lithuanian community in Chicago, and I myself attended a Lithuanian school for seven years. While America feels incredibly vast, Lithuania embodies the essence of family for me. I also feel that I still need to expand my cultural understanding and meet more people here. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and work at LRT, as well as to find out more about what people like about Lithuania," says Monika, who has finished her first year of studies in journalism at Elon University, North Carolina.

"This year, students will carry out their internships at the Republican VU Hospital, the VU Life Sciences Center, UAB "Eika Development", UAB "Telesoftas", Invest Lithuania, UAB "Unlimited Carrier", and many other organisations. The programme is developed in cooperation with the VU Faculty of Communication.

Upon the successful completion of their internships, participants can enhance their CVs with international work experience and earn university credits – in 2017, VU signed a social partnership agreement with LISS and the Lithuanian American Community.

The LISS programme also places emphasis on cultural aspects: after finishing their internships, students can explore Lithuania, meet with cultural figures, and represent the Lithuanian communities established in the USA and Canada during various events and meetings.
