Professor Rolf Dieter Heuer, CERN Director General will Visit Vilnius University. Photo from flickr.comThe delegation of CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) led by professor Rolf Dieter Heuer, Director General of CERN, visited Lithuania and Vilnius University on 26 September 2014. CERN is a European research organization the purpose of which is to operate the world's largest particle physics laboratory.

 

Initially the delegation met the reearch team of the Vilnius University Laser Research Center.

Thereafter professor R. D. Heuer, CERN General Director, professor Dainius Pavalkis, Minister of Education and Science, and professor Valdemaras Razumas, President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences signed the Protocol on the Renewed Cooperation Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and CERN concerning participation of Lithuanian institutions in the CERN reasearch programmes.

In the afternoon professor R. D. Heuer delivered a public lecture to the academic community on different issues of cooperation with CERN.

As professor Juozas Vidmantis Vaitkus said, the Institute of Applied Research of the Vilnius University successfully cooperates in different CERN programms since 1996. In 2004 Lithuania signed first cooperation agreement with CERN, which opened wider cooperation possibilities. The input and achievments of Vilnius University researchers such as Eugenijus Gaubas, Andrius Juodgalvis, Algimantas Juozapavičius and Valdas Rapševičius have always been rated highly by CERN.
