Join the Second Arqus Webinar on English as a Medium of Instruction of This Academic Year
The Arqus Alliance is pleased to announce the second event in its English-Medium Instruction (EMI) Seminar Series for 2024–25 run by Maynooth University titled “Research themes and methods in EMI: An overview and an example study from Algeria.”
The second seminar, delivered jointly by Dr Yulia Kharchenko, assistant professor in applied linguistics and English (TESOL & EMI) at Maynooth University, and Sidi Ahmed Berrabah, a PhD candidate at the University of Limerick, will take place online on Thursday, 16 January 2025, from 12 noon to 1 pm (CET). This seminar will overview existing themes and methodology in EMI research and showcase a mixed-methods doctoral research study on the challenges and opportunities of introducing EMI in post-colonial, multilingual settings.
Participants will review up-to-date research literature and methodology in EMI. They will also learn how mixed-methods research design can be applied in multilingual EMI settings and reflect on the strategic use of translanguaging as a pedagogical tool in multilingual education.
About the speakers
Dr Yulia Kharchenko is an assistant professor in applied linguistics and English (TESOL & EMI) at the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Maynooth University. Her research focuses on EMI educator beliefs and practice, multilingual pedagogy, and sustainable language teacher education. She is a co-convenor or the Arqus university alliance community of practice centred around English as a medium of instruction in higher education.
Yulia previously worked with the EMI centre at Macquarie University, Sydney, a world first that focuses exclusively on English-medium instruction and its associated practices.
Sidi Ahmed Berrabah is a PhD candidate at the University of Limerick specializing in English as a Medium of Instruction. His research explores the introduction of EMI in business degree programs across three Algerian universities, focusing on how multilingual realities influence educational practices, policies, and linguistic identities. Fluent in Arabic, French, and English, Sidi has expertise in interpreting and translation, as well as university teaching experience in research methodology, intercultural studies, and English for specific purposes.
