Join the First Arqus Seminar Series on English-Medium Instruction
The Arqus Alliance is pleased to announce the first event in its English-Medium Instruction (EMI) Seminar Series for 2024-25, titled “Navigating Disparate Knowledge Systems and Academic Cultures in EMI: Whose Responsibility, Is It?”
The opening seminar, delivered by Dr. Clive Earls, Associate Professor in German & Applied Linguistics at Maynooth University, will take place online on Thursday, 12 December 2024, from 12 pm to 1 pm CET. This seminar will explore the concept of knowledge systems in higher education and their role in supporting EMI students’ success.
Participants will gain insights into the potential of intercultural pedagogies to engage with learners’ diverse knowledge systems and explore strategies to foster productive, reciprocal interactions in EMI classrooms.
About the speaker
Dr Clive Earls is an Associate Professor in German & Applied Linguistics at the School of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at Maynooth University. His 2016 research monograph, published by Palgrave MacMillan, investigates English-medium higher education in Germany, drawing on interdisciplinary methodologies from Applied Linguistics, Internationalisation, Sociolinguistics, especially Language Policy and Planning, Intercultural Studies, and Language Pedagogy. Dr Earls is also the Principal Investigator of the national study on Gender Equality in Language Studies in Ireland (GELS).
