European Commission Member D. Reynders to Give Open Lecture at Vilnius University
The member of the European Commission responsible for justice, Mr. Didier Reynders will give an open lecture during which he will discuss issues related to international law, the pursuit of justice in the background of war – all of these are relevant topics in the context of current events.
Russia’s aggression and its war against Ukraine have opened many wounds and started many problems that must be solved not only by the European Union, but by the entire international community. One of these problem areas is law. War aggression, when a sovereign state is attacked, is the most brutal violation of the principle of the rule of law. A series of questions arise both internationally, in society, and, finally, for legal professionals. What tools does the democratic world have to stop the war and restore the rule of law in the first place? From here the question of responsibility arises – how to collect evidence of crimes committed by Russia, which court could and should recognize them as appropriate and consider these cases and make decisions? Frozen assets of the Russian state and oligarchs – what should be the legal basis for such assets to be expropriated and used for aid to Ukraine?
Open lecture and discussion with Mr. Didier Reynders (in English, without translation) will take place in 2023, February 9, at 14:00, in Vilnius University’s Mažoja Aula (Aula Parva), Universiteteto str. 3, Vilnius.
